What a week-Part 2

On Wednesday, October 9th before Milton's arrival, I posted Part 1 of “What a week”. It is now Wednesday evening and Hurricane Milton is about to make landfall in Manatee or Sarasota County. The power of the storm is still significant, however two things happened that made some difference.

There is a trough north of the storm which has affected the storm with dry air and wind shear. It is still going to be a long night. As I said in the previous blog, having this occur at night can make this more intimidating for people.

The Psalmist said in Psalm 91:1-

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

For a believer, this is a powerful and affirming word. The promise is that when we dwell in the shelter of God we are shadowed by Him. I can appreciate that everyone would want such a promise. However, that is only a promise for a believer.

Can you be a believer? Admit you're a sinner. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died and rose again for you. Confess that you are a sinner. Paul said in Romans 10:9-10

…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

At this time, we still have power but of course, we are prepared in case that changes. Someone in our homeowner's community reminded everyone that have a power recliner to be sure to leave it up. That way if the power goes off, it will still be a recliner. Great word and one that we are following.

Fade to dark

Right after I wrote that and while we were watching the weather reports about 10:40 pm Wednesday we lost power. Yeah, it got dark but one thing we did was of course close all interior doors and lock down the garage door because of the wind. We also ran the temperature down so that if we lost power it would not be unbearable initially. Milton had already made landfall so we were riding out the wind and rain. It was, as it was for all, a long night.

That began when Elaine went into the bedroom and found the floor was wet. I know not a good sign. It was coming in at the baseboard. More on that later so now we are trying to get up what was there then slow down what was coming in behind it. We did the best we could amid the storm and would have to wait until things abated the next day to figure out what was happening.

So now, all we could do was try to get some rest and ride out the storm.

Fade to light

Psalm 113:3 says-

From the sunrise in the east to the sunset in the west, may the name of the LORD be praised.

The sun had set the day before the storm came and took out the electrical so it was dark. Yet, praise God the sun rose on that next morning. Light to see what had happened outside. As I made my way outside, there were limbs down but the roof was intact, hallelujah. The screened porch was still there so that was a certain Praise the Lord. The neighbors were all safe, and to God be the glory.

Now back to the bedroom (not to sleep but to asses the damage) so what happened? The wind blew rainwater during the storm onto the back of the house which came through at the baseboard and wet the floor. Of course, we will know more once the situation can be looked at by repair and insurance people.

As for all who were dealing with the aftermath of the storm, it was a day of clean-up. Fortunately, the weather was pretty nice with a lower temperature and a nice breeze. So as the day was coming to an end we decided to go stay in our motorhome. We could use the generator in it along with the water in our tank so we could take a shower and have A/C.

We had advised the neighbors and were packing up what we needed and around 5 pm the power came on, thank you Lord for the lineman who were able to restore the power.

It is important to keep everything in the correct perspective. In Scripture, God is known as El Shaddai, “God, the All-powerful One”. It is His power that has brought us through this storm. His power is greater than the storm. He has made a way through the storm as He does with everything in life.

Isaiah 40:28 ESV asks-

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

What a week for us, our family, friends, neighbors, and fellow Floridians. Our neighbors to the north were dealt with their storm in Helene only a week or so before Milton. Most weeks are not this way but have their issues. So remember the promise of God's Word in Isaiah 41:10 ESV-

fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Have a great weekend and we will be back again with A thought to ponder.

In God's Grace,

Do we have a Great God or What? Thank you for your update about how God protected you in the storm.
