Doing His Will, Just Do It

It is a very common statement by someone who wants to do the will of God to ask what is His will. I know that like you I have asked that question in my own life. Is there someplace in Scripture that tells us what the will of God is for us? The answer is yes, and it is found in the words of Jesus Christ Himself as recorded in John 6:38-40 NKJV-

38 For I have come down from heaven (the abode of God), not to do My own will (His own determination desire, pleasure), but the will (determination desire, pleasure) of Him who sent Me.

He begins by stating that He came to do the will of God, not His own will.

39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Thus, it is God’s will that we see Jesus Christ and believe in Him resulting in eternal life. I have referred to John 3:16-17 before and always will because it’s also the words of Jesus Christ. Again, using the NKJV-

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes (has faith, implying to trust, Jesus for spiritual wellbeing) in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

I wanted to establish a baseline for what I am going to share in a moment with you. There is another text in which Jesus again is saying something very important. Specifically in Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV- He states I never knew you. Look at what He says and pay close attention.

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’

23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never (the Greek word means “never ever at any time” today never, never, never) knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Jesus indicates clearly that someone can do and say what we would consider to be the right things but not be saved. Remember the will of God, it is God’s will that we see Jesus Christ and believe in Him resulting in eternal life.

People can believe in Jesus and who He is historically but never believe in Him unto salvation. We don’t like to think of that, but it is true and Jesus says so. Sadly, they are in our church memberships. They are pastors, educators, leaders throughout the world of the organized church.

Jesus declares that they practice lawlessness. The King James says they “work iniquity”.  The point made is that they transgress the law, they are lawless. 1 John 3:4 tells us-

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

What we see here is that there are those who do good and as the text says in the name of Jesus. People do good and many contribute to society and assist others. Even when done in the name of Jesus or for the causes of the church and regardless of how much good is done.  Failing to do the will of God is working iniquity.

The understanding that is important here is that salvation is by grace and not by actions. There are countless people today who do wonderful things for others and are doing so under the guise of being a Christian. The term Christian has become a generic word used to identify someone from another. Any other belief system and person that is not in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord is not one that should be identified as Christian.

We are a world divided by sin. Those who are saved and those that are not. It is most likely that there are more who are not Christian than those that are Christian in the final analysis.

What should you do today? You should be certain that today you are saved as Scripture requires you to be. Remember John 6:39 from earlier today-

40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Romans 10:8-9 says-

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Just do it, do it today, do it today.

In God’s Grace,
